Hi Everyone,

I'm setting up a load of routers for a CCNP lab, am i right in thinking that you can basically have each ethernet port connected to the same Layer 2 switch if necessary (for convenience) and it will not cause any weird loops etc because it is all IP and a layer 3 situation?

eg, if you have a 172.16.0.1 and a 10.1.0.1 on the same switch they are essentially invisible to each other and a PC plugged inot the same switch would only be able to access each one if its address range was suitable.

Any thoughts?

Incorrect it won't work if they are all in the same vlan on the switch . If you set multiple vlans on the switch and then connect each port to a separate vlan on the switch it would be fine otherwise you are going have conflicting address ranges and things won't work correctly . This is why you need a router to go between vlans . If you have a L2/l3 switch then that is different story in that everything cqan be programmed on the one switch to route between vlans .

Vlan's don't come into it, it's just a test bed for routing. Instead of having wires going out of one interface and into others and cables everywhere, they are just plugged into the ports of a layer 2 switch.
