Hello,
I purchased 2000 professional for a home computer because I trade stocks and pay bills and other financial transactions and am concerned about online security.

I know this operating system is very complex and all I want to do is use it as a replacement for the Win98SE that is always locking up/freezing on me.

I don't play games or any fluff, just surf the net and would like to share internet connection with my desktop and Laptop. I am not sharp enough to get into the bowels of this operating system.

Could someone suggest a simple installation. I would be the only user (cept maybe the wife when we share the internet connection).

Any assistance appreciated.

Yohann

I am not sure I understand what you are asking. Have you already installed Windows 2000?

Nope,
Just bought it. should be here on tuesday. Thought maybe I could get some hints on how to install it. I mean I have read here about Active Directory and Supervisor Privliges and alout of things that look pretty complicated, and thought maybe I didn't need to install everything. John Farrow

Ah yeah! It may look scary, but it's not bad. Active Directory will be transparent to you. You won't even realize you are using it. Just install it as normal and use NTFS format. Let me know if you have other questions.

Active directory only applies to win 2000 server (not the desktop pro version). Run the install - its straightforward, if a bit longwinded. After installed, set up user account for yourself with admin privileges (also one for your wife if she's going to use it). In nornal use it looks & feels very like win98 (except it doesn't keep freezing, rebooting etc). It does have a number of 'advanced' facilities - but you don't need to worry what they are (honestly!). If you need advanced functionality later - please return to this forum if necessary.
PS. The help in win2000 is very good (much better than win98 - don't be afraid to use it).

Thanks for your help. What about the updates? I bought it on Ebay and it was the OEM and I don't think I got any updates.

If it comes with the 5.1 version of IE, would you let it install that or download 6.0 to start with. If I decide to dual boot, can I make only one partition NTFS? And what is the advantage of this NTFS.

Thanks again. John Farrow

you have to install 5.1 if you want to download an upgrade.. ntfs is an advanced file system with good security features, file–by–file compression, quotas, and encryption... look it up.. u can have more than one ntfs partition if u want more than one.. u can even mix and match file systems on different partitions

Win2k installs with IE 5.1 - you can't upgrade till its installed. Just go to the windows update site - get IE6 & service pack 2 & any security updates (plus anything else you want from what's available).

If you dual boot you can make just one partition NTFS - but remember win9x/ME systems can't access NTFS partitions without 3rd party software ( has a freeware utility which allows win9x/ME to read - not write NTFS partitions). NTFS is a more 'advanced' filestore than FAT32, but in normal use on one PC there aren't any significant advantages to using it (if you're part of a domain network, its advanced security/privacy features can be useful).
