Simple DNS quesion - I hope.

When trying to get a workstation on a WAN to see an intranet server on a WAN, if you can't ping it, you can't get to it through DNS?

The DNS server sees the intranet server, gets to the web page and everythings else on that box. You can ping it, no problems.

I have an entry in both the forward and revierse lookup zones.

The workstation can't ping the intranet server. but a nslookup brings back info except for the forward IP address.

Even though I can't ping the intranet server should I still be able to get to it?

No. If you cannot ping it, and it is one of your internal servers, you have no connectivity. When you type that web address, you are requesting a page that resides on that server. If you cannot connect to it, then you cannot retrieve that page.
Is the DNS server on the same subnet as the workstation or Web server? Can the workstation ping anything on the remote subnet? You may need to add a route. Do a TRACERT to the IP of the webserver and see what route you take and where it stops....

Thanks a lot Matt, that's what I thought, I wanted to get another opinion befor I trouble shoot this one.

remote web server is 192.168.3.x

workstation is 192.168.1.x

DNS is 192.168.1.x

I can't ping anything at 192.168.3.x

I can ping everything at 192.168.2.x

Does the router for the 192.168.1.x network have a route for the 192.168.3.x network? Try the TRACERT and see where you are timing out...

Doing a tracert timed out. So at prompt, I did a route -p add ....

This fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help, now I can connect to the remote server.

Do you know if there is a way to automate this process, so I don't have to visit all the PC's?

Add the static route to the Gateway Router. Or if you cannot access or configure the router, put it in a logon script...
