At home I have a 2003 server and I've not used the built-in job scheduler backup utility.

After loosing 2 drives, I'm going with an external drive for a backup. My plan is to schedule the job in windows to just copy the data from the C/D drives to the ext HD on a routine basis.

It's not critical data so I'm not looking for a best practice solution, but I am looking for advice.

you can create a batch including xcopy or robocopy command to copy the files. Then schedule to run the batch file.

That's kinda what I was thinking if the general consensus was to NOT use the built-in backup as part of a scheduled job.

The built in NT backup isn't a bad solution. I've used it before in a live environment. The only real problem came in the tape rotation because in the NT (built in) backup, I found management of backup media through the (I think it was) removable media console sort of difficult. However, the backup and restore process was rather simple. I've also used an xcopy batch file scheduled with an "at" command. Worked alrght as well.
I *think*, though I'm not sure (it's been a long time since I've had to use either), that NT backup offers some kind of compression where I don't believe xcopy does.
Personally, I'd say give both a try and see which one you like best.

Good luck.
