I've got some SID's that randomly appear in file security properties. They appear in SID format and have no name and have a question mark beside the head. My understanding is that the OS ( Windows 2000 ) cannot find a name for the SID in a lookup table. I think they're causing me other problems and I'd like to get rid of them. Is they're a utility for this or does anyone know of a way of getting rid of them.

Hi,
These SIDS are of objects which have had accounts deleted on the server. Its unlikely that they are causing you problems.

Just some more information.
The SIDs without names are probably old user accounts not
existing on the Domain or your machine. You can delete
them.

If you have a trust relationship with a second (or more) Domain I would investigate problems of Domain A reaching the DCs or PDCs of the other Domains. As the problem is happening regularly it strongly suggests an inter-Domain or inter-DC communication failure of an intermittant type.

And is perhaps a good indication of some issue on the Domain.

For the utility you can modify it with ghostwalk. Make sure that when you boot it up it's off the network when rename it.
