NEC Powermate VL3 running win 98 SE, fully patched (including mapped drive shutdown bug fixes etc).

This work pc suddenly decided it doesnt want to shut down anymore. It will restart and go into standby mode ok but it refuses to shutdown. Have re-installed everything from image partition and also replaced PSU. When windows attempts to shutdown as soon as the "Please wait while windows shuts down your PC" screen is displayed it sounds like it powers down the hard drive and the power light goes out on the front of the PC but the PSU and CPU fans are still going and the CD ROM still has power. Windows then remains on this screen until I press the power button which restarts the PC.

I've checked the bios and tried installing bios defaults but still no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jamie

Seems to me there was a patch for the power off problem that happened with win98. Check Microsoft.

Have you changed video, sound or network drivers lately? Any of those might contribute to this conflict. About 2-4 years ago I had Compaq Presarios have a conflict between some of their video or sound drivers with the Netware client. Almost as bad with HP Pavilion Celerons (not Pentiums) from the same time period. Naturally, Microsoft made sure that symtom went away when moving from Netware IPX/SPX to Microsoft Networking protocols. Could that be the case here?

As crazy as it may seem, I've heard of corrupt sound files (in this cae, the one that Windows makes during the log off process) causing this problem.

Suggest that you look in the 98 forum for several loooong threads about the problem, along with a FAQ, plus a google search.
There are n+1 possible reasons, with n=number of 98SE users. And having temporary fixes resolving the problem for various lengths of time is not unknown, in fact expected.
You could try the shutdown 99.9% solution. Shortcut on the desktop for c:\windows\rundll user, exitwindows. You'll need to manually power off.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure its hardware failure somewhere along the line as no software changes had been made, no new hardware added, and I have already reinstalled everything so all the system files, drivers etc should be fine. Maybe I'll check out the win98 forum as suggested.

Thanks,
Jamie

1.-Try removing EASY CD CREATOR if installed.
2.- try disable the startup programs. Go Start then RUN and type MSCONFIG , Then go to startup tab and disable everything.OK Good Luck :)
