Shut down fails to turn off power

I hate to bring up this topic again but I have searched the old messages for help on this topic and none of the suggestions have worked.

Under Win98 my PC will power off when I shut down. Under XP I get the dialog box that says it is now safe to turn off the power and then the PC hangs. I have to manually power off.

One suggestion was to check the APM setting in the Device Manager. But my listing does not show an entry for it. Could it be that XP did not load the Power Manager? The APM option in BIOS is set to Yes.

That does sound like what happened. XP didn't install the APM component, hence it's not enabled. Did you by chance disable any services? One of those services (I can't remember what it's called) is critical for APM to work correctly.

Check your device manager for ANY mention of APM. If you don't see it, then it's not installed. Is Plug-n-Play enabled in your BIOS? If everything looks good and XP just doesn't auto-detect the APM, you may want to look for a BIOS update. Win98 was working fine with it, the only change now is a new OS. My laptop needed a BIOS update so it would work with Win2k (even though I have XP on here now, same thing).

Power Options settings are in Control Panel (should be.)
Select the advanced tab and choose Shut down for: When I press the power button on my computer...

The advanced tab in Power Options only shows "Always show icon on the taskbar." I don't have the option you describe.

If I don't have the APM on my PC how do I get it installed? Does it only depend on the BIOS and get installed automatically?

I have sent a message to my motherboard vendor to see if there is a BIOS upgrade that will solve this problem.

Where in Device Manager do you find any mention of APM?
My system powers down like it should...but I haven't found APM in Device Manager.

Do you mean ACPI? (Advance Configuration & Power Interface)

That's in Device Manager...this computer is an ACPI Uniprocessor PC.

I DO get the Power Button Settings in the lower part of the Dialog Box in Advanced...tho.
Repair install XP?

Simple"-Right click My computer select Properties then hardware-device manager then do not change the view it should be on "devices by type" left click computer in the device tree then right click ACPI system - update driver-Select "Dont search I will choose the driver to install".
Now choose Advanced Configuration and Power Interface(ACPI)PC. Should solve most power management probs.

There's the rub. I don't have ACPI listed anywhere in the device manager list.
