I've gone into the shrink database dialog box and adjusted the database size that way, but when I double-click on the database device, it's still the size that it was before.
Can you tell me how to shrink the size of the device, not the database?
Thanking you in advance. Mike K

Mike,

Is this a follow up on another post? I'm not quite following what you mean by "adjusted the database size that way." In the Shrink dialog, you can select an option to move pages before shrinking. This is usually required to get maximum shrink. At the bottom of the dialog, there is an option to shrink the files. On the next screen you can attempt to shrink each file (data and log) individually.

See faq183-1534, "Shrinking Databases and Logs - SQL 7 and Higher." There are additional FAQs about shrinking databases and files in the FAQ area of this forum.

Thanks, Terry.
I apologize for a fuzzy post. I was in a hurry.
I also forgot to mention that this is SQL 6.5.
What I meant by "that way" was this:
Under databases, I have my list of databases. If I select the one I'd like to shrink, and double-click it, I get a dialog box (Edit Database) that has a button that says "Shrink". If I select that button, I get a dialog box (Shrink Database) that allows me to specify the database size (1000M in this case). I don't get all those other options of moving pages, shrinking files, etc.. I just get buttons that say OK, Cancel and Help (the Help button is not much good in this case). However, the size of the database here is fine (I like 1000M). The size of the database, then is not my issue .
The issue is when I cancel out of the Shrink Database and Edit Databse windows, and go up to my Database Devices tree, and then double-click the Database Device that corresponds to the database I was just looking at, I see that its size has not been adjusted. It is still 2G, for example.
Thanks for any help you can provide. Mike K

I haven't used SQL 6.5 for about three years. It is hard to remember much. As I recall, the SQL 6.5 device size could not be reduced. The only option that I am aware of is creating a new database with smaller devices (files) and transferring your database to the new devices with transfer manager. Perhaps someone with more recent experience can provide alternatives. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA

Terry, that does have the ring of truth to it.
I think you're right.
Thanks again. Mike K
