I don't have Office XP, but I would expect it to have the same options as in Office '97.
In BOTH Excel and Word, you can have the path, filename and extention in the toolbar, by following these steps:
1) Right-click on the toolbar area.
2) Choose "Customize" (at the bottom of the dropdown).
3) In the "Customize" window, click on the "Commands" tab at the top.
4) Under "Categories" (left side) click on "Web".
5) Under "Commands" (right side) click-and-drag "Address" (should be the first item at the top), to an available place on one of your existing toolbars.
6) If you don't have sufficient room on any of the existing toolbars, you have the option of adding an additional "Custom" toolbar, and click-and-drag the "Address" to that toolbar. First, click the "Toolbar" tab, and then click "New" (right side). Then drag the new toolbar to the top of the screen.
Thank you! That works great and is a toolbar item I hadn't discovered. I also found I could uncheck "hide extensions of known file types" in Window Folder options through the Explorer. Your way gives more info, as it includes the pathname as well.
