In the quick launch area at the bottom of the screen next to the Start menu I have an icon which shows as a shortcut to show desktop. The icon works fine if I click on it, this is because on my desktop I have an icon for show desktop. If however I delete the icon on the desktop (show desktop) the shortcut to show desktop also fails to work in the quick launch area.

My problem is this, I want to just have the show desktop in the quick launch area and no shortcut on the desktop. If I try and drag the show desktop icon from the desktop to the quick launch section it creates a shortcut. This works fine until I delete the icon on the desktop then fails to work. If I try a copy or cut the icon from the desktop and paste to the quick launch area same problem.

This all happened by mistake when I dragged the show desktop icon from the quicklaunch section to the desktop. I just want no icon on the desktop and a show desktop in the quick launch area.
Hope this makes sense, its hard to describe ! Any ideas :) ?
Thanks

Delete the icon in the Quick Launch bar. This is just a shortcut to the command file on the desktop. Next, 'cut' the 'Show Desktop' icon on the desktop (which is actually the command file), right-click on an empty spot in the Quick Launch bar, select 'Open Folder' from the context menu and 'paste' the command file.

If it all goes horribly wrong, delete any 'Show Desktop' icons in the Quick Launch bar and the desktop then do the following.

Copy and paste the following lines into Notepad.

Code:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the file as Show Desktop.scf to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch (where <username> is the logged on user).

It might be easier to save it as Show Desktop.scf to the desktop first then 'cut' it. Next, right-click on an empty spot in the Quick Launch bar, select 'Open Folder' from the context menu and 'paste' it.

Hope this helps...

Does this give you any ideas to try?

190355 - How to Re-create the Show Desktop Icon on Quick Launch Toolbar

Try it with this alternate location too.

X:\Documents and Settings\UserNamexxxx\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

You can always just use the Windows Key+D to display the Desktop. Right-clicking the Taskbar /Toolbars/ Desktop, is another method.

Thanks Guys, I'll try out the suggestions you have both posted. Thanks Again, PC MAD

And if you right-click the icon on the Desktop, Properties, and set the icon to Hidden?
