Hi people

Question:

I got Home ver WinXP with my new 1.7 gig mhz computer. Whats the advantage upgrading to WinXP Pro.

Should I buy and Upgrade or Full Ver WinXP Pro

If I buy a Full Vers will it install over my Home
Ver or do I have to uninstall the home ver?

any comments is appreciated

Thanks

There are some office type networking (Domains) things that Home can't do and the security otions are limited on Home (but better that 9x/ME) but over all the OSes are the the same. You can find out more starting at this MS site:
As to upgrading if you choose to do so. There is a special price for an XP Pro Upgrade only for users who got XP Home installed on your machine by the OEM. I can't recall where I found that info but I know it to be true. I'll check around and post back if I find it. I seem to remember that you may have gotten a coupon or rebate included with your system.

But anyway, you can upgrade from Home to Pro with an Upgrade CD you don't need the full version to do so.

Further info:

It is called the Windows XP Professional Step-up rebate and it is referenced on this page but the link (in the description next to Rebate:) doesn't work. You may have to contact MS directly if you don't have a rebate coupon. Supposed to save $75 so it is worth looking for if you decide to upgrade.

Also found a good link that discusses the diffs between Home and Pro in clearer terms:

You definitely don't need to go with the Full version. You can still do a clean install from the upgrade cd as long as you have the license # from you Home edition.
