i'm pretty nifty with keyboard shorcuts and i tend to avoid the mouse often.

while using windows explorer you can use the backspace button rather than using the mouse to click the back button.

but sometime you need to go Up a level instead of back. does anoyone know the keyboard shortcut for Up a level?

BACKSPACE View the folder one level up in My Computer or Windows Explorer.

that's not entirely right.

backspace will view the last folder - much like using Back when browsing the Web - i want to go Up a level.

In XP windows explorer, backspace is most definately 'up one directory'.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

It's not that I dont believe you but if backspace really is 'up one directory' please do this little test for me...

- open explorer and navigate to a folder
- double click on a sub-folder
- with the mouse, click the 'up one level' button
- you should now be back in your original folder
- now press backspace.

for me the backspace goes 'back' rather than 'up'
what happens for you?

It takes me up a directory!

I there was an edit post button. What I should have added was: I don't disbelieve you either, I have performed this test on several XP machines in the office and it always takes me up a directory.

Very odd really!
