Is there a keyboard shortcut to minimise all open windows and show the desktop?

Press and Hold Windows Key, then tap the M key.

It doesn't matter. By the time you realize you need to hit Windows + D, it is too late.

I know you asked for a keyboard shortcut, but there are some more common solutions.

If you show the Quick Launch toolbar, there is an icon there that looks liek a desk blotter. This minimizes all open applications and shows the desktop.

If this icon has been deleted, you can recreate it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

@ScubaStevo:
By now you know the various shortcuts.
I assume that you have to access objects on your desktop from time to time (especialy when the desktop is overcrowded).
Why not right-click the taskbar, point to Toolbars and enable Desktop.
Now you have access to all the elements of your desktop without the need to minimize all open windows.
Drag the dotted seperator all the way to the right, so you only see the word Desktop. All the elements on your desktop are selectable by a menu behind the >> button.

Or you could use Alt+Tab to toggle between open windows/apps.
