Does anyone know if there is a limit on the number of active shares on an NT server, we are about to try and "merge" several File and Print Servers and discounting Network traffic (!!!), I want to make sure we are not going to exceed any "limits" on the O/S....

thanks...

HI,

I think what you asked is related with licensing. Amximum no of active shares means maximum concurrent connection made on the server right?

Per server license - Clients are licensed to a particular server, and the number of concurrent connections to the server cannot exceed the maximum specified in the license. When the maximum number of concurrent connections is reached, Windows NT returns an error to a connecting user and prohibits access. An administrator can still connect after the maximum is reached, however. (Choose this option if unsure - you have a one-time chance to convert the per server license to a per seat license using the Control Panel Licensing application)
Per seat license - Clients are free to use any server they want, and an unlimited number of clients can connect to a server

Thanks Aslam.....

The info in your reply is correct as far as configuring the permitted connections limit to the server...

Its not quite what I was meaning....

We need to find out if there is a limitation within the NT O/S on the ammount of active network connections to configured shares on a server...is this a registry setting specific to shares or a combination of keys (such as maxworkitems)...???

I found a reply to a similar question in another forum which mentioned a parameter DOMAIN OBJECT, it sounds like this is domain specific, anyway it's limit (in an NT domain) is apparently 100,000 objects, which includes user accounts, computer accounts, shares, printers etc... again I'm unsure as to how this figure is arrived at...???

Thanks again.....
