sharepoint file storage

Hi!
I upload a file on the sharepoint portal server doc library an when I can't find it on that server. can you tell me where and how does sharepoint store uploaded files ?

when you upload documents they are stored in a database.
MSDE or SQL2000, depends on what product you installed.
