Shared SMTP domain name

My current system is W2K with exchange 5.5 sp3, new system is W2k with Exchange 2000.

Question: I'd like to share the SMTP name space and have the 5.5 system forward mail to the new ssytem, if the user doesn't exist on the 5.5 system.

User1@company.com ...if found on the 5.5 system, deliver, if not forward (relay?) to the 2000 system, if exist deliver, if not reply to sender as undeliverable.

Seems like this might be possible, looking at MS knowledgebase - 25803, but I can make it work.
