Building a print server on W2K3 R2 SP2. When I create and share printers, icons representing those printers show up in the root of my server (alongside the file shares) when you browse to it. Oddly enough, there is also a folder called "Printers and Faxes" that shows up, and inside that all the printers are listed again.

Is there anyway I can prevent these print shares from showing up in the root of my server? It would be fine to have them listed only in the "Printers and Faxes" folder.

TIA.

Not if you are sharing them. The only way is NOT to share them, which may not be good.

However, you should be able to hide shares on your server, but that's not good if you want to share any folders as well.

One thing that helps when setting up a new printer on someone's machine, that those shares help for though, is to goto:

\\myserver

Then double-click on the printer you want to add to that PC. The installation happens automatically... no need for add printer wiizard and such.

In order for my users to install and use them, they have to be shared don't they?

When I logon as a standard user and goto \\myserver the printers will not install from there. When you doubleclick one it brings up the printer management window (where the job queue is listed), it doesn't install the printer. Is there some setting I'm missing?

Thanks.

No, that just means it is already installed. To see what I mean, try deleting the printer from your local PC (from Printers and Faxes), and then while in printers and Faxes, click File -> Server properties. Go to the driver tab and delete the driver for that printer.

Then go back and double-click. The queue management window should take a slightly longer time to appear. When it does, the installation has finished.

In fact the appearance of that window means it isntalled correctly! ;)

Well I'll be dipped, they ARE installing. Wow that's fast!

Thanks.

Heh, Yeah, when I discovered the first time you could do that I do it all the time now.

I have a script that adds printers, but it sometimes hitches, and when we get noew printers in and such, it becomes a pain.

And then with a script it becomes a pain if you want to install only those printers near the user. It was easier when we were smaller.

So now, with new machines, we get the user to log on, goto \\printserver and just double-click all the printers they need for their floor, etc. :)
