Been using Peer to Peer Networking (fixed IP's) with shares for years ... in the last couple of weeks something has gone south ... Running XP PRO SP2 with AUTO UPDATES ON ... using MS FIREWALL, simple Share turned off, LMHOSTS set with all fixed addresses, Guest is off (always has been but noticed some people say this should be enabled???), All PC's are in the same Workgroup, Behind a router, File Sharing is checked in the exception list of the firewall, netbios over tcp/ip is on ... I can connect if I disable the FIREWALL on the pc with the share, net View shows all the computers in the network but none of the shares, and net use or map returns network not found errors when I attempt to connect to the share. Has MS updates caused an issue here with a change to how the Security of the firewall works or am I missing something? The only thing that has been done on this PC that I know is the updates ... it runs 24/7 with no Keyboard/Mouse or Monitor running home automation software and backup routines.

I now have SHARES working again after adding a 3rd party firewall ... not sure if XP pro has an advanced setting for netbios udp/tcp filters but this appears to be what was blocking the network traffic for the shared resources ... still makes me wonder if a MS update is involved.

In a similar circunstance it was an issue with the IP stack. The IP reset sequence procedure restored funtionality.
Could ping one way without problems through the router but couldn't get further than the router from the opposite direction. So it couldn't see the share.
I can't recall the firewall specifics but don't recall it being an issue. Did disable it in the process of resolving the issue the enabled it when I finished.

Thank-you for this information ... netsh appears to have alls sorts of uses ... however in this case I am quite sure that the stack was ok as the shares worked fine the moment I dropped the Windows Firewall ... it also works now using a 3rd party firewall configured to allow netbios traffic flow on the intranet connections.
