Shadow copy storage area location

It seems that the Windows 2003 Shadow Copy service will only write snapshots to a local volume/drive.
Is there any way around this.
I'd like to send the snapshots to another box, e.g. a network share.

Apparently for performance reasons you need to direct it to a local disk.
