I haven't run into this yet but was wondering. If you run SFC and you have a OEM license on a system when promped for the xp cd will a volume license or retail cd work? I normaly just blow in a fresh copy from an image but was just wondering.

Also if you need the same type license how do you get around the most of these new systems with pre-built images? and no xp cd?

Thanks
Mike

I think SFC will look for the files or CD location mentioned in this Registry location.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Have a look at the Value for SourcePath and see what it says.

Change the souce file path

Not to sure what you actually mean by the second question. Depending on the machines you may have to create a recovery CD from the actual machine via the instructions in the getting started manual, or contact the OEM for a Recovery CD.

I guess maybe i wasn't clear. I just looked at a recovery cd I have for a Toshiba Notebook. All thats on it is some software and a factory restore image. If I needed to run SFC /scannow and it asked for the XP cd would you be able to put in a volume license cd or retail cd. Would that work? If not is there anyway around that besides maybe coping the i386 directory off it to a cd.

Try running the command and see what it asks for. You may already have the I386 folder on the Notebook. You can easily prevent SFC from running by rebooting the machine if you don't wish it to complete or it can't run for some reason.

If it asks for a CD and you substitute CD's it may fail because of CD identification problems. Also Notebooks with OEM installs may require a CD with special drivers and files specific to your Notebook.
