Setup Windows XP as a WINS Server

Hi everyone!

I hear say that it is possible to configure Windows XP to be a WINS Server but I can't find any documentation about that. Someone has an idea about how to do this?

Hmm, who told you that? As far as I know, you can only run a WINS server on Windows server class products (W2K Server, advanced server, W2K3 server etc).

The only way I can think of is to install an lmhosts file on the xp machine. That still wouldn't allow it to be a server, however. Wins is not used on xp at all. Once W2K came around, then dns really kicked in.

That's one FAQs I found on this site.

We now use a Cisco PIX in one of our office and before installing that PIX, we had only a Cisco 1000 router that with a simple command, allowed broadcast through so it was possible to go in Network Neighborhood and "see" the computers from that office because of WINS. But this command line doesn't work in the PIX. If I'm using a LMHOSTS file on these machines that are behind the PIX, do you think it could make this work?

Only Windows server editions can run as WINS servers. However, client machines such as 2K Pro and XP Pro can run as WINS proxies through a registry edit which acts as a gateway for WINS clients to reach the WINS server located on a remote subnet.

And is there any documentation somewhere on the net that I could use to do this?

What is weird tough is that when I look at my WINS server, I can see that the clients states is active for that subnet but I can't see them in Network Neighborhood anyway. Could it be because they're communicating through a VPN connection?
