We are running Exchange 5.5 and have users running on multiple OS within the domain. I want to set one particular mailbox - which is set up as a normal mailbox with an associated user account - to allow other users access. Exchange Administrators can get to the mailbox, but I have not been able to get it to work for regular users. I went into "permissions" for the mailbox in question and added the desired users with the role of "user" - but, and I added the mailbox to their Outlook profile on their machines. This brought the mailbox into their folder lists, but when they select it they are :

"unable to expand folder" and/or "unable to display folder. The Operation failed.". This worked the same for one user running NT 4 and another running Win 2000, so I assume it is something I did not set up properly in Exchange.

The mailbox that you are trying to add users to. Log on ass that user and open up the outlook for it. Right click on the inbox and add who you want. That should fix your problem.

Sometimes the permissions on Exchange 5.5 take hours to take affect (have never worked out a reason or any logic to this). Try leaving it a few hours then give it another go..

Thanks, by logging on as the user and right-clicking the mailbox I was able to assign the desired permissions. The ones I had set up in Exchange were not showing up.

Thank you for the help.

Sorry about the horible spelling i was tired when i wroe it, but i had experienced the same exact thing before myself. It sure is annoying that it doesnt work when you do it on the server isnt it.

I had the same problem yesterday, trying to allow a manager access to an employees mailbox that had resigned. Of course, the permissions weren't taking effect and I gave up. After reading this post about permissions taking hours to become active, I tried again today and it worked.

Just a confirmation of the hint provided. Don't know how many hours it can take, though.

thanks alichamberlain!

Default time to write DS permission changes to the IS is every 120 minutes, so on average permissions changes take an hour to take effect (see KB179065 for details and instructions on how to reduce the time - 5 minutes doesn't seem to overly stress any server, and is much more convienient).
