Hello:

I recently acquired a Windows 2000 Server. I want to set it up just for file and print sharing....I only want to give certin people access to certain files....can anyone give me any pointers on setting the server up? Am I going to have to learn Active Directory? ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok...so i set the server up as a domain controller...my clients can acces the internet fine....they get dhcp from the server....but i am still confused as to how to make home directories...and folders that only certain people can see....in Novell it was pretty easy just make an object and give permissions.... can anyone walk me through setting a folder up and allowing only certain groups to see it? any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Well you can create folders on the server and set the permissions on that folder for the person you wish to access it. If you do not want anyone else to even see that share is out there, then create the share name with a $ after it. For example: share$
will only be known to the admin to help set up a mapped drive. Also under Active Directory, you can set up home directories under the user properties. Hope that helps some.

Probably an easier way to do this is,

1. Create a folder on your server called HOME

2. Open the properties page of the user, click the Profiles tab. Under Home folder, click the radio button for 'connect' and choose a drive specification. Then simply type in the path to the folder, for example \\servername\HOME\%username% Now Windows will create a subfolder for that user (%username%) inside the HOME folder and automatically set the permissions to FC for that user and nothing for anyone else.

Hope this helps,
