Setting up MQ client on windows platform

I downloaded and installed websphere MQ V6 with a limited 90 trial period and it all works very well. When i went to buy keys for it i was told that even for a windows platform the software costs £4,500 but i could use a free client if all i wanted to do was setup a simple message receipt system. I downloaded Websphere MQ V6 client and installed it on my laptop (Windows XP pro SP2). It installed Java SDK 1.4.2. and the websphere client software OK, but there is nothing in my programs menu other than "prepare Websphere MQ wizard". When i run this i only get the option to view a readme file (all other options like running MQ explorer V6 are greyed out). I tried installed pre-reqs from the IES directory of the MQV6 server disc but that has not helped at all(even after uninstalling and re-installing the client software).

What i was trying to do was to configure the MQ client software to connect to the MQ server (on an iSeries machine) in the same way as it is currently setup, preferably with an MQ explorer GUI.

Is this do-able? Where am i going wrong?

I think you need to set up your connection on the server first.

I already have a server setup (on an iSeries machine). I installed the Websphere MQ V6 server trial download onto the windows machine and it happily receives messages from the iSeries and passes them onto the application for processing. Problem that i have is that the trial period is almost over and i don't want to stump up £4,500 for a full server licence on the windows machine if all i actually need to do is change the windows machine around to just use a free MQ client instead (can't believe the software for a PC platform costs so much). The setup of the client seems much more difficult than setting up the server version (through MQ explorer) of the same product.

Have you read the manual "MQ Clients"?

You don't need to configure the client as such, what you need to do is set the MQSERVER variable. There is really nothing to set up, it is just a set of DLL that gets installed. You may need to relink your application though to use the client libraries.

There is a significant difference in how client applications should be written. They should check for connection broken (2009) return codes.
