Setting up Legato Networker - what do i do first?? 2

Having this project already purchased and being thrown in my lap - I've googled it and also looked on Legato's site - being a first time implementor I'm really not sure what I'm looking for or what should be done first. Can you please offer some guidance?

Any assistance you can offer would be appreciated - I can do the footwork, I'd just appreciate a little guidance of "do this, then this.....etc. ". What I have is:

* Priority First Year Maintenance Software update subscription service (major & minor releases) included with Priority Support

I'm a guru in other areas but this is thrown into my lap and I don't know where to start or what to do with what... Many thanks in advance.

- Make sure that the name resolution is fast and unique in your network

- Setup the hardware on your NW server
- Disable the Removable Storage Manager Service
- Make sure that it runs with the OS tools (ntbackup) as NW relies on it
- Then install the NW software
- Next configure the hardware for the NetWorker server
- (Inventory the jukebox?)
- Label a media
- Do your first manual backup (via GUI or "save" command)

- Learn a bit of the theory
- Plan the residual configuration depending on your environment
- Repeat the general setup and configuration for the other nodes

Ok, my first day, Networker 7.4.build.187 is installed on Win2k3 and appears to be functioning - well, let me clarify - the client has been installed on a few Win2k3 servers and a few Red Hat workstations, and while in Networker Management Console I can see them.... Now, I went to Computer Management/Removable Storage and I can see the installed tape library (Quantum Scalar i500)...my question is, how do I connect to the tape library to do a backup in otherwords which Networker package?

In looking at the Legato docs, it appears I should be using Networker User to do backups - but when I open that it says "This client is not licensed for VSS. If required, please enter a VSS Enabler on the Networker License Manager."....what does this mean becuase I can click Ok and it goes to the screen where I can back up local files but I want to backup remote clients....

Lastly, which may be answered by the question I just asked - how do I backup something from a Red Hat client?

The package you need to install on a Storage Node (a Client with backup hardware installed) is the Storage Node package. On Windows, you do not see that because you only specify the functionality this host shall become.

Once again - DISABLE RSM !

Now use the GUI to inventory the jukebox and label tapes to the Default pool.

VSS is a MS specific snapshot technology - if not licensed, NW does use the legacy method (a standard fiel backup).

NW 7.4 does not have a GUI for backups any more. For this purpose, you must use the 'save' command: save directory .

To hide the VSS licensing bit, edit the given client, and look for the "Save operations" field - not sure which tab it's on as I use the X version of nwadmin now.

Enter "VSS:*=off" in that field, and you shouldn't see any more VSS licensing spam.

Thanks to you all (Ch 11; havent tried that yet but will), in the meantime; For the life of me I couldn't figure out what the Disk Path format is (as you'll see), After installing the Networker software (server/storage node/client and necessary client packs), disabling RSM in Windows 2003 server and rebooting. In Networker Administration - Devices, under Libraries, I can see the ADIC@7.1.1, right clicked to configure and receive the message that I must use jbconfig to confure it. Opened a command prompt and typed inquire which brought up:

I have two questions; 1. What am I doing wrong to configure this library as it can be seen by the system?

2. This may be unrelated or related but when I go into the Networker User program to do a backup, I get the message: "This client is not licensed for VSS. If required, please enter a VSS Enabler on the Networker License Manager."....(again, I'll try that if I get the option)

Two things.

First, I'll point this out:

Where you are putting in "\\rap05h.doc.microshaft.com\Tape0", you should be putting in "\\.\Tape0" as indicated in the example.

Second, at that point in jbconfig, you are specifying drives (devices), not autochangers. It's asking for the paths to your tape drives, not your autochanger. It already knows the path to the autochanger from earlier.

Ignore the VSS errors for now imo.

Being new to this, I'm a quicker learner (and not afraid to try stuff as you can see) but I'm not sure what format it's asking for, then it look like it took in one instance, then the question for drive two.... I'm not sure what to put for either one but I did try that and it failed - my NW server is a WinBlows box that will be backing up other servers onto the jukebox drives if that will help you to help me?? What do I need to type to specify drive 1..and what for drive 2?

The tape drives have not been properly configured for the OS - they should appear as "\\.\Tape#" respectively but inquire does not show this. The only device which has added to the OS is the jukebox (\\.\Changer0). This is most likely due to the fact that the correct driver has not been installed.

As you can only configure HW for NetWorker which has been setup by/for the OS, the installation will fail. And the error message is correct as these device names do not exist yet.

So before you do any NW configuration, add the correct drive for the LTO-3s first.

Thanks to you both, I've downloaded the correct drivers from the libraries site and installed it - show's up in Device Manager correctly....Just thinking outloud; Hmm, perhaps there's something I need to do on the changer side itself.

Wow, in two days I'm just all into this (not that I know what I'm doing yet - just been asked to "make it work")...I'll double-check things and followup with this thread over the weekend.

Thanks to you both, I updated the drivers on the OS and rebooted, re-ran jbconfig, and was able to run the backup successfully. I need to start another thread, but thanks to this one - it's operational now...
