setting up IIS, and getting other users to see my stuff "help me" 2

Okay, first I would like to say hello all, and I thank you for looking at this for me.... I've tried many Idea's I'm running a Dlink DI-624 router, and my server is microsoft windows 2000 advanced server. now it's all configured and install OS runs great, my problem is setting up iis so other people can see my pages. I can get other computers on the network by typing in my servers local ip to see them however I cannot get people outside the router to see the site. I would greatly appreciate any help that people can offer to me on this thank you

Use port forwarding on your Dlink to send incoming traffic on port 80 to the IP (internal) of the server.

your setup sounds simple and this should be pretty easy. First you need to make sure the server is fully patched, lots of IIS hacks out there. Second you need to forward port 80 to your windows server, this is done in the dlink, shouldnt be that hard to find the port forward config page in the router setup. Third you need to tell the people the ip of your pubic presence on the internet, if you dont have a domain name that is. You can get the external ip by looking at the status tab in your dlink or you can go to

http://www.ipchicken.com

and it will tell you your external ip. that should be about it.

Good Luck and be carefull opening ports leaves you vulnerable to intrusion.

thank you, I'm going to try it out however I believe I've done this already only on the tcp portion of it... do I have to do both udp also?

Ok, well it really is as simple as we stated. So... lets explore some other ideas. Firewall on the router or server? You didnt setup IIS to listen on a port other than 80 did ya? Triple check the port forward in the router, its port forward not a port triggers. Port triggers are bit different. you try and put the server in the dmz of the router just to test it quick and rule out other issues. feel free to tell us anything else you think is important.

well I really apreciate you with sticking with me on this ^^.. iis is set up for only port 80, I thought about port 8080 but then realised maybe I better not. the firewall is off on the router... and there's I didn't put it in port triggers... the dmz I always thought was the major issue but it doesn't seem to work out. I'm going to try another port to see if that works. an alternative idea is I have a program called winVNC. if your willing to connect to my server using that program and diagnose the problem yourself maybe I did mane to set something up wrong?

Vejita, what are you trying to hit? Are you typing in your excternal IP address when attempting to bring up your site from the Internet? Of course, you will not get anything if you try to hit your internal IP from outside. Just a thought...

well, not quite trying to hit that my aim is to allow my site that's hosted in iis, I want other users when they type in my ip address to be able to see it however, I believe I've come to the conclusion that my ISP is blocking port 80 and I can't do it at all!

Well i dont mind helping you via the forum, i think you should be very cautious about having ppl you dont know or even ppl you do know for that matter connecting to your server. I could be a monster retard for all you know. This is what i think. If you can access the website from your LAN you probably configured the IIS server good enough to work. Its clearly a communication problem between your server and outside world. What do ppl see when they hit your server from outside?

well, lol the monster issue isn't really a problem lol... people see that the sites up however they get a page cannot be displayed and it's a real issue as I need this site up for a little bit of hosted I need/want to do. I also run into this issue when running other programs such as ftp, apache... so lol I'm really really stumped!

This is a "i wonder why" question. If IIS and ftp wont work, why do you think i could connect with VNC? i ask this because have you had other ppl or yourself connect to this server with VNC from outside your network? If you can get VNC working through your router IIS would be no different. I am wondering if your ISP is blocking these services. You could prove this by setting IIS to listen on Port 2967 lets say. We want to set the port outside the normal 1-1024 port range that standard services listen on. Your ISP may block access to these ports but probably wouldnt be blocking many ports over 1024. Who is your ISP by the way?

well, roadki11 you've been great help to me... actually you where right changing the port to an outside port such as port 8080 work rather well. I did have a buddy connect vnc and he connected just fine. my isp is armstrong cable but thank you so much for the help you truely know what your talking about!!!

Great im glad i helped. I guess remember in the future to put any services you want to run on high ports as your ISP seems to be blocking standard ports.
