Hi,

I'm in the middle of setting up an in-house mail server for a company that I work for.

Until now they've used an outsourced mail server with a pop3 poller to check for new mail periodically, which isn't the most practical option ever.

I'm using FreeBSD 5.1, Exim MTA and popd. Does anyone know of a good way to set the system up so that when Exim recieves a new e-mail, I can notify a Windows client that a mail has been recieved?

I know this may seem a little strange, but with the type of work this company does, it's very useful to be notified whenever a mail arrives, straight away. And now as the company is expanding, our ISP isn't too happy about several POP3 pollers connecting to their servers constantly.

The mail server and the Windows clients are on the same LAN.

Many thanks,

Daniel Briley

dbriley,

Although your company may not like the idea, having a Windows client check your pop server every minute or so seems like the only way around this problem.

Otherwise, how would the FreeBSD server "notify" the windows client? The client-server model only works when the client requests data from the server.

I hope that this helps.
