Setting up a Linux/Windows network

I have a DHCP router that both systems are connected to. I have a static IP at the router, with the customary 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses for each of the two systems. How can I set up the Linux box to be visible to the internet without having the Windows box visible? I can ftp and telnet to the Linux box from my Windows box, but what I really need is to be able to run the Linux box as a server.

Should I have gotten a hub instead of a router? Or just what the heck is it that I need? Any good articles out there that explain the process in detail? Seems the folks who sell routers don't support Linux even though they are set up to run Linux OS.....

what do you want to make visible ? ftp ? telnet ? ssh ? web ?

Just set up port mapping on your gateway (router or Win2K server) and map the ports to your internal LInus machine.
Use firewall software to block all other ports on your gateway ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work

Thank you. The router I had was not particularly amenable to customization, and the cable modem has a firewall that appears to be impossible to work around.

I have put the server back on the DSL line for now and am going to rethink my whole connection scheme. I may decide to just get a hub and run the Windows box through the Linux box.
