Setting the DPI on a new document

Could anyone advise me how to set the DPI on a new document in InDesign. Thanks

There is none as ID is not a raster app. Any graphics created in ID are vectors. Text is text. Resolution of imported rasters (jpg, psd, tif, etc) is dependent on teh resolution set in the creator app.

now im really lost. i got advised that to have graphics (and the document/file) at least 300dpi. so how does this reflect on working on an indesign document?

The advice is wrong. The ONLY part of an ID doc involving dpi is iimported rasters.

so back to my original question i asked on another forum is:

when designing for print, how do i ensure that the document is print quality? ie. fonts, graphics, etc. and any formatting i have to make to the document to ensure a crisp clean quality, especially when designing logos.

...i believe the transparency flattener settings determine dpi for effects used in indesign (feathers, drop shadows etc) when exported to pdf 1.3 or postscript...

...logos tend to be artworked in illustrator or an equivalent vector application. Vector graphics are device resolution independent meaning they can be scaled larger to any size and the output device will render the vector artwork the best it is able to. When reducing vector graphics note that thin key lines can caused problems, especially if in tints. As the graphic reduces in size lines can disappear if the output device isn't capable of imaging them. As a rule 0.25pt strokes are the very minimum a line should get...

...one bit bitmaps (line art graphics) are generally OK around 600dpi to 1400dpi (at actual size)...

You really should go to the Indesing Help (help menu) click on teh Contents tab and thoroughly go through it. The various topics give you a good overview of how to manage ID. You might also consider using teh various tutorials.

...in indesign if you select a graphic and view the info palette it will indicate the original dpi and the effective dpi. Note with some imported graphics this function doesn't always work...

...make use of the preflight feature in indesign (file > preflight) to find any problem elements...

The resolution for output that InDesign produces is managed at... output. This is defined in the print and export functions. It is not something that you do at the start of a new document. This allows you to create art suited for the printing press or onscreen display using the same document.

Of course, you must place raster art that is of a sufficient resolution to support whatever resolution you want at export.
