Will "work" when plugged in but fall asleep after a few minutes.
Thanks in advance.

johnpoole may be on to something. We just had a customer buy some 3900 sets from another supplier and had us out to install them. Well everything was going well until we got one that did not act right. So we did an IDU on it and it turns out that the serial # on the phone and box are the same but they did not match the one that you got from the IDU comand on the switch. So we went and did about 5 more and none of them matched. Went back to the shop and ran one from our stock and it did match. We compared the box from one of their phones with one of ours and the lettering on the label was in a different type also. Anyone know or heard of maybe any bootlegged phones out there?

Did it say Nortell on the box.. Like a Rolax watch :)

Actually, I think it's common for aftermarket repair houses to clear some of the chips, just so they don't have to bother with some future investigation about how they were acquired. Kinda like covering up their tracks.

Taking off the 'Nortel Hat' for a second with some PERSONAL observations....

Refurbished phones are like buying a car from 'some guy on the corner'.

Many refurbished phones come from unauthorized 'chop shops'. They take in pallets of used phones, and they make good ones from the parts of others. Anyone with a chip burner can easily overwrite the serial number parameters in the chips. As Gene said, people print their own boxes and labels and copy Nortel as close as they can. The average person would never know the difference, and it's so easy to clean up, repaint plastic, that you can put new and used side by side and even a seasoned person would have a hard time without carefully examining the smallest of details.

It all comes down to quality. Every used car you see on a dealers lot looks clean and shiny, but you would never know the history of the car. (is it worth investing in CARFAX for phones?)

People look at price. A $50 phone looks the same as a $100 phone. This is why Nortel has authorized re-manufacturers. These phones are refurbished to Nortel specifications. Of course, these are the most expensive as they carry the highest quality.

In the end, you are faced with the same choice as anything: Quality vs. Price. Only you can decide which is the right balance of the two for you.

As I said, these are my PERSONAL observations from my years in the industry.
