I have a customer who decided to relocate their telephone wiring center. They are in three separate buildings and have an MICS and an ASM8. The feeder cables from the other building have been rerun. Approximately 45 sets are involved. I was thinking about turning on set relocation so I do not have to worry about missing a crossconnect color combo. Any experience or hints would be helpful. What triggers the actual set relo? Can I turn it on and move the sets in 30 minutes or do I have to turn it on and let it sit a while? How is the ASM8 effected?

Thanks for the help.

Wayne

I think the ASM might be an issue since it's analog, anolog items do not carry programming so you will need to cross connect at time of move.

Set relocation when on has no time out.
Can be used when they want to move when they are good and ready but suggest you be there at time of move as some people report issues with set relocate.
I have never had issues but I plug in 1 phone at a time and not all at once.

i once had a customer move/swap about 30 phones all at once and when all was said and done the system defaulted to square.Since then i say if you want to use
unplug 2 phones and swap... once they are functional then do the next 2..so on and so forth

As a repairman, I would stay away from set relo like you stay away from rattlesnakes.....you just may get bit. I have had to rekey several Norstars from database corruption. I have also seen Nortels SRN's about the symptoms database corruption from set relo and the problems vary. It may be that, if done properly, all comes out ok in the end, but it may not. If it goes bad, as Luger said, either it pukes, or you have various problems that only get cleared by rekeying the database. It really is a gamble........

I have never had one problem with auto set relo. I do 1 ext at a time as directed in the manual and in many years I have never had a problem.

Agreed. Set relocation wasn't designed for a wide scale, all at once move, merely an office swap. Even then, sometimes it doesn't work perfectly. I always f*0 line pool buttons, and the like when I use it.

For your move, avoid it like the plague. Make sure you label the sets with their ext/port numbers before they move, and turn set reloc. OFF.

I use set relocation all the time, even for big moves, and it USUALLY works great. Like Curlycord said, do it one phone at a time. You only want one phone "booting" at a time on the system as you replug it.

We use Set Relocation often. If it is used correctly it works, although Nortel does not gaurantee it 100%. The way I handle moves is I write down the extensions and the ports they are on and at the new site I cross connect using this sheet. I still have set relocation on but I don't rely on that completely.

If you move all at once, play taps. A Norstar set can take a full three minutes to be recognized and become stable when moved. If you move too many the system can easily blow up.
I use set relocation with strict guidelines. Unplug set A,
go to new location, plug in, DO NOT TOUCH for three minutes unless necessary to put out a fire! Move sets in a staggered fashion two or three at a time. DO NOT TOUCH moved set for three minutes! NO MATTER What! Do not answer the phone! Do not make a call!
Make sure that each person carries their own set because if they take the wrong set by accident they will immediately start trying other jacks and you will pay for it.
Do not unplug sets until they are moved. Do not plug another set into the vacated jack until all sets have been verified.
Prepare a place to hide and someone else to blame and you will have no problems.
