I set Google.com as my homepage by going into Internet Options/Use Current/Apply/OK/ but when I log-off and delete cookies in the Temp. Internet Files Folder and log back on it takes me to the Earthlink Start Page. I dont understand.

You may be using an Earthlink branded browser. Many of these customized browsers will not keep changes to the start page, proxy settings, etc.

You may try doing it in the registry at
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main and modify the "Start Page" entry.
It is also found at
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main. Modify it at both locations.

This may not work if there is some program running in startup which is changing the start page automatically.

There are several things that can cause this kind of problem.
Your computer has been infected with a virus that changed your Internet Explorer home page. For example, the

-IRC.Becky.A worm and Trojan.JS.Clid.gen trojan horse viruses change the Internet Explorer home page.

-Code in the form of a malicious attack that exploits a security vulnerability has been run on your computer.

-You chose to install third-party software that changed the Internet Explorer home page. For example, the SecondPower Multimedia Speedbar from SecondPower.com and the GoHip! Web browser enhancement from GoHip.com change the Internet Explorer home page.

-You are using a customized version of Internet Explorer that was packaged by using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK), and your administrator configured your home page.

My suggestion is to try performing a clean boot and going into the registry. If you have Win98 clean boot by
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System
Tools, and then click System Information.

2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

- Start System Configuration Utility at the Run command. To do this, click
Start, click Run, type "msconfig.exe" (without the quotation marks) in the
Open box, and then click OK.
1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the
following check boxes:

- Process Config.sys File
- Process Autoexec.bat File
- Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
- Process System.ini File
- Process Win.ini File
- Load Startup Group Items

2. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

(((What this does (incase you'd like to know) is each check box (except the Load Startup Group Items check box) represents files that are renamed with a troubleshoot (.tsh) file extension when you click to clear the check box. The Load Startup Group Items check box represents icons in the Startup folder or entries in the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

-and-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

When you click to clear the Load Startup Group Items check box, the registry
entries are written in the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

-and-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices-
-and-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

The icons in the Startup folder are moved to the Disabled Startup Items folder in
the Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

When you click to clear check box for a file, a "remark" statement is placed at
the beginning of each line in the file. For both the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat
files, a "rem tshoot" statement followed by a space is placed at the beginning
of the lines in the file for the check box that you click to clear. For both the
System.ini and Win.ini files, a "; tshoot" statement followed by a space is
placed at the beginning of the lines in the file for the check box that you
click to clear. These remarks are removed when you click to select a check box
that you previously clicked to clear. When you click to select a check box for
an item on the Startup tab, the registry entry is restored to its original
location.

You must restart your computer each time that you make a change to any of the
startup files because they are read-only when your computer starts.)))

AFter you have completed a clean boot then you will:

Click Start , and then click Run .

In the Open box, type regedit , and then click OK .

In the Registry Editor, locate the following subkey (if it exists):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
If a HomePage dword value exists in this key, select it.

On the Edit menu, click Delete , and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.

On the Registry menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

If the issue is resolved at this point. Continue these steps.

Open the Web site that you want to set as your home page in Internet Explorer.

Click Tools , click Internet Options , and then click Use Current . Restart your computer, and then restart Internet Explorer.

Let me know if that helps you. If not there are other things we can try.

The Google.com homepage works when I dont delete the cookies in the TIF folder. It only directs me to the Earthlink homepage ONLY when the cookies are deleted.

A friend of mine had at&t as his isp, and could not get rid of the at&t home page. Chances are that if you pay $7 or less, or more likely free, for internet service, then the provider stuck you with some ad software that is causing your problem.

OK got all the info. But my main concern is that this happens ONLY when cookies are deleted after I logg off the net. That's it.
