Has anyone ever created a recordset outside of GoldMine, using DDE and then made that record set the current record set for GoldMine?

If so, any pointers on how to set this up?

I can use DDE with access with no problems, but solving this task; is it possible?

Thanks,
Hap...

Richard,

Thanks, can you let me know what chapter or command to lookup.

I found that guide has a great deal of information, but... unless you know what you are looking for first, well it is tough to find a certain feature without having to re-read the complete thing. And, if I knew what I was looking for, well then I would have the answer (what came first, the egg or the chicken)

Thanks,
Hap...

Richard,

Thanks, that helps.

I read about the RECORDOBJ and it seems to fill half of my problem.

Here is the second half.

After I build my record set, in my outside application, I do not want to then control GoldMine contacts. What I want to do is send that filter or filtered record set back to GoldMine so the user can use that set of records to navigate using the GoldMine up down arrows and the like. This way the user might schedule a task or the like from the recordset I built. I want the records I selected to be the only records available until the user clears the filter.

Do you know of any commands that might do that?

Thanks,
Hap...

Hi Hap,

OK, you cant do that with RECORDOBJ.

You'll need to use the low level commands (OPEN/APPEND/REPLACE/UNLOCK/CLOSE) etc on the filters tab and in the filter there and then either get the user to activate it or fire keystrokes at GoldMine to activate it.

Richard.

Hap,

What are you trying to do that is so complicated that you need to build your filtered set of contacts outside of GoldMine?

There is an SQL Query tab within GoldMine that you can select records in GoldMine with and then create a group out of...

Basically what you're doing in your access bd externally is to hash a list of goldmine accountno's right? Then, once you get them, to have the user in GoldMine drill down to only those records, you're going to have to have that user activate a filter that filters for a value you've written back to the relevant GoldMine records.. There's not much other way around it, really.. I anticipate this bit of customization being SLOW from the users' perspective, however, since in that write-back to GM step, you're going to have to find the records previously written back to and clear them and THEN write back to the proper, current record set...

Overall, I think it'll be easier to just teach the users how to use filters and groups or how to accomplish the record grouping you're doing all within the GM application...

Your decision, though... ;)

Hi Doug,

Yes, I agree with you 100 percent, but the customer is always right and the potential client has a need to track about 100 stocks. So, to do this the way that is desired by my client, I will need to create 100 fields.

I could build the queries or filters to select based on these 100 fields, but the client does not want to have to pick from a list of 100 queries, so my mission....

Client wants to be prompted and enter a 'Stock' code
I then use that entry to query and return the desired recordset.

Pretty simple stuff, but I can not figure how to place a Prompt field in a query in GoldMine SQL and if I do it external in a program using DDE, then I need to return the complete recordset to GoldMine for the operator.

This would be easy if GM had VBA or the like,

Oh Well,
Thanks,
Hap...

Richard,

Here might be an example.

Remember, these are customers of the GoldMine user. These customers/investors own or have interest in certain stocks.

So, say a stock has something special about to happen, then the desire is to pull up a list of these investors, and perhaps call them or send them all an email or a fax.

The problem here is that the client wants their employees to enter a stock symbol, not pick a query or filter from a list. (The query list might be 200 queries when all possible combinations are considered)

So, I need to figure this out, if possible.

Thanks,
Hap...

Sounds like you're on track then.. Give them a little interface with an alphabetized dropdown and let them pick the stock. Pressing the 'GO' button would then make a filter with their desired criteria and direct them to it...

Either that or just create 200 filters in advance and they go to the list of 200 filters and activate whichever one they're interested in at the time.. no custom programming involved.
