I have NT4.0 (sp6a) running as a PDC on an IBM xSeries 250 server with twin 1Ghz processors and 1GB RAM. Disks are 2x9GB in RAID1, 1x9GB and 3x36GB in RAID5.
Installed software is Oracle 8.1.6 (Standard Server), CA ArcServeIT + Oracle Backup Agent, Powerchute plus UPS monitoring software, Sophos Anti-Virus and PC Anywhere 10.0 (host only).
I recently noticed that the processor utilization was much higher than other servers of similar configuration. Upon investigation I saw that SERVICES.EXE was using between 30-60% of both processors constantly.
There are only ever 30-40 users connected at peak times and even off-peak the problem is the same.
Services running are (from NET START command):
These Windows NT services are started:
Alerter
ARCserveIT Database Engine
ARCserveIT Discovery Service
ARCserveIT Job Engine
ARCserveIT Message Engine
ARCserveIT Tape Engine
Backup Agent RPC Server
Computer Browser
Event Log Watch
EventLog
FTP Publishing Service
IIS Admin Service
License Logging Service
Messenger
MSDTC
Net Logon
NT LM Security Support Provider
OracleOraHome81TNSListener
OracleServiceDEV
OracleServiceTEST
pcAnywhere Host Service
Plug and Play
Protected Storage
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service
Server
Spooler
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Workstation
World Wide Web Publishing Service
The command completed successfully.
I have tried killing all the services I dare but still SERVICES.EXE hogs the processor. Any ideas????
