Morning all

I've just noticed that our SQL server has never been service packed!!
What is the latest sp and is it relatively painless to install?
Can I jump to the latest sp, or do I need to install all service packs in order?

Yes you can jump to the latest service pack without installing the previous versions.

On SQL Server 6.5 it's SP5a.

On On SQL Server 7.0 it's SP3.

I don't know what it is on SQL Server 2000 but you can easily find this out from the Microsoft web site from where you can also download the service packs as well.

Rick.

We have SQL 7.
Are there any dangers I should know about before trashing my SQL server with a service pack?

The Service pack comes with a read me file which should tell you all you need to know.

Do ensure all your databases including master and msdb are all backed up prior to the install.

No guarantees here but I have installed SP3 on at least 15 servers all which had no prior service pack installed and have had no problems.

Rick.

Cheers for the info Rick.
I'll let you know how I get on..
