Hi all,

I'm trying to install service pack 4 for NT4. I have downloaded all the relevant files for the microsoft site and saved them to my c:/temp folder. When i double click the install.exe file a message pops up saying "cannot detect OS type" - this is as far as i can go!

Pleas please help! Many thanks for your time.

leejack,

I have seen this error occur with NT 4 Option Pack but never with a service pack. To correct the problem with Option Pack the NetLogon and Computer Browser services must be running. You might want to verify that both of these services are running and see if this also corrects the error for a service pack installation.

Thanks Epohl,

i did actually mean option pack, sorry! How do i verify that my browser services and Netlogon are running? And if they are not, how do i run them? Sorry, i'm not use to NT, just using it so i can access IIS & PWS.

Many thanks for your help.

Go to control panel and choose the services icon. Highlight Computer Browser and netlogon, if the status does not have started click the start button on the right to start the service. You might actually want to change the startup settings for these services so they start automatically.

Thanks very much again Epohl for your help. Unfortunately it sounds like there is a major problem on my computer as when i start the netlogon and browser the follwing error occurs: "Error 1059: circular service dependancy was specified" and i cannot continue. Looks like i need a technician in as this is beyond my knowledge!

Cheers for your help.

A little research on the MS web site (Article ID: Q186550) indicates that your error 1059…. Is part of the Terminal Server Edition of NT 4.0 Server. However, MS does not offer any solutions. There must be another MS resource that better defines and explains this error code. Based on some of the things that I have read it would appear that one of your services depends on another service that normally starts later or services that depend on each other. Here you would have a Catch-22 situation where you can’t have one without the other and vice-versa; perhaps a corrupted registry. Did you perhaps upgrade your nt 4.0 from a nt 3.5x? or was your NT 4.0 a clean build. You may simply need to reinstall the latest service pack to fix your problem. -- Devil Dog --

leejack,

Computer Browser service is dependant on the Server and Workstation services. Netlogon is dependant upon the Server Service. You may want to check and make sure the Server service and Workstation service are both started.
