Service Pack 3

We're having problems with a new server. The place we purchased it through sent consultants out to look at it. The first thing they did was put sp3 on it, even though I questioned it. His reply, (and he's right) is that if we call Microsoft, that's the first thing they'll ask. He said it's safe to install it as long as you do it right...
He told me if you do the archive you can remove it later. I'm putting it on a laptop of mine that I use for testing. I'll let you know how it works out. Glen A. Johnson

There are a few threads floating around right now about this, but the main thing seems to be that everything works (mostly).
I had an issue where on an older machine it wouldn't allow me to browse the network but could still get DNS resolution and knew where the DNS server was. Was able to back out of it because the files were archived and everything went back to normal.
I installed again, this time getting the file from Microsoft instead of using the Windows Update service and that seemed to make things... better... I would recommend you download the file and try it that way.
Side note: I don't want my client workstations to automagically download updates for me. I want to be able to install them on my terms and only after I know they work. So I disabled the Automatic Updates option in the Control Panel and then killed and disabled the service for the Automatic Updates in Computer Management snap-in. Works great so far! J.R. Juiliano

Only problem I had was that it took off the imaging program list I got to choose from when i plugged my digital camera in. I fixed it by going into multi properties. I can see my sister's computer in network neighborhood but when i click on it it freezes for awhile.. then says not accessable (it was b4 sp3 was installed). I'm going to take another look @ it when i have time.

Same goes here, i put them on varies machines and they all seems nothing happened, because we been keeping all updates current
almost the same as you did your sp2 with a wack of updates,
i even tried on a win2k fresh install and then jump to sp3 and it seems to work perfect, in fact it solved some of the error in event log, minor issue

I have loaded SP-3 on several workstations (Dells & IBMs) with no problems whatsoever (knock on wood).
In the 8 years I've been doing this stuff I can't remember a whole lot of problems with any Service Pack updates, now a few of the individual updates have left something to be desired, but I believe MicroSoft knows that most users only update on the major Service Packs releases so they are a little more careful with them!
