Service pack 3 installation 1

Hi

well I am quite new to Netware.

I have downloaded updates such as service pack 3, how do i go about installing it to the server. It is a test server.
Can i just burn it to cd and then copy it to the server somewhere then run nwconfig.

Do i do the same for other updates.

I tried extracting the service pack on a normal workstation win 2000 can i do that?

It's easy to install.. Extract the file to the root of SYS: from a dos prompt on your workstation:

C:\NW6SP3E.EXE F:\ -Y (This assumes F: is mapped to root of SYS

Then run NWCONFIG from the server console, product options, install new product, and then point it to the directory that was created when the service pack was extracted, in this case it should be something like SYS:NW6SP3E. (Usually the directory created matches the name of the archive)

You also need to add a couple critical patches:

NW6NSS3C.EXE, TCP607K.EXE, and SECUPD2.TGZ. The NW6NSS3C will prevent lots of pain and agony from corrupt files, and make sure you do not enable level 2 oplocks or client file caching when prompted at the end of the nw6nss3c install.

If memory serves correctly, they all install through NWCONFIG. I could be wrong so read the docs that come with.

tcp607k - just extract files - 3 of them i think and overwrite the current ones

they are in sys:system

By applying the service pack does it update e-directory.?

no the service pack update netware only and the services within that
ie dhcp/dns , ndps etc
edir is seperate
what version are you on
it gets really confusing now

edir is updated the same way ie through nwconfig for most except for some minor point issue ones

at server type m ds*
what version of ds is it

thanks marv well ive gor sp3 on now. next step is to put the rset on well.

I noticed oplocks enable level 2 when the server restarted tho, after sp3 install.

This is only a test server mind so i can play around with it. Any tweaks that I could apply. after the updates would be useful thanks Happy new year

Yeah, sp3 will enable those oplocks. Turn them off. And after the NW6NSS3C patch, it also gives you the chance to turn them off again. If you don't do it there, make sure you have settings in the autoexec.ncf to turn them off:

set level 2 oplocks enabled=off
set client file caching enabled=off

No matter what Novell says, turn these off. You just have to trust me on this. Leaving them on is not worth it.

Could you please elaborate a little more on your position regarding oplocks and file caching? I have heard some instances of data corruption, problems with saved files etc... Only in those instances I've disabled these settings. My nw6 servers have client file caching enabled, level 2 oplocks disabled and my files are fine. I havent gotten around to playing with level 2 oplocks yet. Any advice or anything I should be concerned about? Thanks

8.6.2 is older now
you need to install 8.7.1 and then upgrade this to i think 8.7.1.4

you may need to go to 8.7 first but think you can go straight to 8.7.1 - it will tell you in readme

straight forward upgrade just same as before through nwconfig

when you apply nw6nss3c - the caching and oplocks will prompt to yes by default - just change it to no
you will see them in autoexec - first two lines

Summoner, my position on it is this. My clients trust me to protect their data and keep their systems stable. I've seen so many problems with file corruption, pool corruption, access problems, etc that I opt to turn it off and avoid problems rather than take the chance and potentially lose data. If it works for you the way you say, that's great. But I would rather turn them all off and know that the above problems will not happen.

By the way - regarding the eDir updates in SP3 question: There is an update to DS (v10350.19) in SP3 that has known issues on servers that have Filtered Replicas and that receive LDAP querries.

Whenever you initiate an LDAP query to that server (with the filtered replicas) the server will ABEND almost immediately. Take it from me, its happened in our test lab.

Novell recommended we either update to the latest eDir version (8.7.x) or download and install 8.6.2 SP5.
