Hi,
Were planning to migrate our company Intranet inhouse to a dedicated server. The server will be running:

Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition + IIS6
MS SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition
ColdFusion MX 6.1

We have 1200 employees who use the Intranet for downloading documents and forms. Looking at latest company news, employee directory, etc etc..

There will also be a content management system to manage the Intranet content. The database is currently sized at 300MB.

What would be the recommended spec for sort of application. Also allowing for growth aswell.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server is a memory hog, so you need to get as much memory as you can for the server, especially if you're going to be running the CF/web server on the same machine. It's really not recommended that you have SQL Server on the same machine, it's usually set up as a seperate server. However that's not always possible. Just remember, when SQL Server starts using tons of memory, you've got to make sure you still have enough to run the other stuff on the server too.

Hope This Helps!

AS Ecobb says SQL Server is a total memory hog, although it is often crucial for it to be used on the same machine.

I would recommend a server with dual Xeon processors, 2gig of ram, SCSI harddrives for fast data access.

Just a thought on good server specs

The way web design should be

Hi everyone,
thanks for all your response.

If i opted for a server with:
4 x Intel Xeon Processors
4GB RAM
3 x 36.4GB (15K rpm) drives.

would that be overkill for a Intranet environment, with 1200 employees. But realistically 20-30 concurrent users either viewing dynamic CF content or updating it.

thanks in advance.

That may be a little overkill for your current setup, but it would give you room for growth, which should also be a big concern. With that server you would be able to expand on your Intranet/databases and not have to worry about upgrading servers for a while. You want to make sure you get a server that will still be able to handle whatever you want it to do 2 or 3 years from now. There's no point in buying a much smaller (cheaper) server that fits your current needs only to find out you've outgrown it in a year.

Sounds like you're on the right track, though.

Hope This Helps!
