The primary server here at our office has one CPU but room for a second. I've been playing with Performance monitoring to try to determine if the additional CPU would help us... but have not read any of the books on performance monitoring yet.

Could someone suggest a few of the monitors to track with respect to whether another CPU would help? And above what readings one should consider adding the second CPU?

The system in questions is an IBM 866mhz unit with 1.5 Gigs of memory, and RAID 5.

Many Thanks.

Paul

well, monitor the average cpu usage in your work hours, if it passes 70% or around it, you should add the second one A+, MCP, CCNA

It is amazing how UNDER used some servers are, we have a server that handles our ERP software, file and print services, for about 40 users. I have never seen the usage above 10-15%. It is a 933PIII, 512 RAM, Raid 5.

I would be happy about it.
You should monitor for a significant period of time. And what I mean with significant it is not extremely long, but long enough to show the typical loads of work and some extreme loads also. A+, MCP, CCNA

Official Microsoft Processor Utilization specs for a new Processor is 80% over a SUSTAINED period of time MCSE NT&2K,CCNA/CCDA,CNA,ASE,NSP

Also check the processor queue length anything over 2 for a sustained period suggests that the processor is overworked.

Better to be underutilized than to be overutilized and have users griping at you cause the server is slow!
