Hi all,

I currently have a windows 2K File Server name "ABC".
Due to storage problem I puchased another Server.
The Server I purchased I also want to name "ABC" and move all files over thus removing the previous server off the network.

Are their any problems that I should be aware?

Thanks

Is the current server a DC or just a member server? If it's a DC, is it handling any other chores such as DHCP, DNS, etc?

If it's just a member server then you can just swap them out...the only issue you'll need to watch for is users permissions on the folders/files.

Thank you.

No it's just acting as a File Server no other services running.

I did not think it was a big issue, but just wanted to make sure.
Yeah, I'll import the registry key for the file permission from the old server.

Thanks again.

File permissions are stored with the file as access control lists (ACL). perform a backup of the files and restore them to the new PC to retain the ACL's.

Yeah, you're good to go then. Follow Seaspray0's advice, that's the best way to do it. I've used the backup/restore method several times and it works like a charm.
