Greetings,

I am running 3 NT 4.0 Servers, one as an exchange server, one as a proxy/DC and one as a files server. The Fileserver also has SMS on it. Recently, one of my associates logged off the server after doing some admin work, and then left the office. I needed to get back on to reset a users profile, so I logged on, and then, the closing all network connections window came up, and I was right back at the login screen. It is stil performing its server duties, like file sharing, profile replication, as well as netlogon duties, but I just can not get on it to do anything. I would hate to have to do a repair on the OS, I hope there is a way to fix it with that. I can access my other 2 servers just fine, and I can map to file seervers hard drive, could some one please help?

I had this happen before on NT Server 4 as well as on XP. I don't remember the NT4.0 incident clearly but in the case of XP it happened immediately after making administrative changes just like what you said the other admin did. There are different thing you could try.

1. Log on as a different admin user and make necessary changes.
2. Take the server offline and run the ERD (hopefully you have an updated one - I always have an updated one). Restore the registry.
3. Physically take out the HDD, put it in on of the other servers and replace the config directory in the system root/system32 folder (assuming it is NTFS already).

You might also try rebooting the server and try the Last Known good Configuration on boot up. This should (microsoft!!!) restore the registry to the state it was in when you had the last successful log in.

Tried the Last known user option, about to try taking the darn HD out and replacing the config dir, will post update later
