Please can you help?

I came into work this morning to find that the server had crashed.

I am running Netware 5.1 sp5 with Arcserver 7.

I believe that arcserve is causing the server to crash, as when I start the program (ASTART), the server will crash and displays the following messages:

Error writing FAT table for volume OG/SYS.
Error writng to the directory on OG/SYS.
OG TTS shutdown.
File server OG is down. Connection Terminated.

Please can anyone help me on how I can stop this from happening.

Thanks,

Jim

Sounds like you may have a serious problem on your hands. Load up the server without loading Arcserve and see if you can connect to it. I am guessing that your Arcserve database may have grown to such a size that you have no free space on SYS. If this is the case, you will either need to add more diskspace to SYS or ideally reinstall Arcserve onto a seperate volume. For now and to get the server working and risk corruption to NDS, delete the contents of SYS;ARCSERVE\DATABASE which will remove the Arcserve database. Don't worry, if you need to do a restore you can always merge the tape back into the database.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there any way of checking the size of the database before I delete it?

My sys vol is on an 8BG drive. The SYS vol is only currently using 1GB of that.

Cheers.

ok, I just got the size of the database folder; it's 125MB

Is that unhealthy?

Hi Jim,

125 MB for a Arcserve database is quite small so that is not the issue.

Have you checked the abend log? Is the server abending before it goes down? The log may give you more clues. If not, I would reinstall arcserve. Sounds like you may have some Arcserve corruption.

OK guys I'll try re-installing it.

Thanks for your help.

It could also mean that your SYS volume is corrupt. You may have to run a VREPAIR on it. Best way to do this is load SERVER -NA, dismount SYS, load VREPAIR and repair the volume.

Any time I see FAT errors on SYS, I think "Serious Hardware Problems"

I would doubt that it's related to groupwise, it's just that the symptoms are coming to head through the read/writes that groupwise is doing.

Did your .HAM modules for the Disk controller get updated with the service pack? Check through the VOL$LOG.ERR on the sys drive, see if you notice any other errors. Also check the SYS$LOG.ERR for any problems as well. When did they start happening?
