what software would you recommend for backing up your windows 2000 server? In other words, if I was to go and make some big modifications to the OS, How do I back up the settings (Users, Active Directory, etc.) I have for the operating system? I was told that normal back up software only backs up your data, but doesn't back up all of the settings that were entered on the original set up. I have Veritas Back Up Ver. 8.0. Can Veritas run a system back up?

Thanks in advance

2000 Server comes out of the box with a broken down version of Veritas this can be used to perform what they call a "System State" backup.
This does registry, Active Directory etc.
I would test the restore methods of this otherwise there is Backup Exec or Arcserve Server.

HOw would I go about backing up the "system State"? I have Backup Exec ver. 8.0. Does anyone know how to back up the "system state"?

Thanks

with veritas it should have the option to select the system state when you choose what to backup in the wizard.....not sure about 8, i know this is the case in 8.6 however, I constantly did system state backups (on a nightly basis) through there

Go to new backup job, when you expand the server object (if remote) then system state should be listed in there, otehrwise if doing just the local machine it should just be listed (its usually at the very bottom where no1 bothers to look)

the key words for it are system state, if the options not there, upgrade to veritas 8.6 for NT/2000 server

Take care when restoring a system state, because when you shut down the server after a restore it saves your current settings and overwrites some elements of the registry.

I use Ghost and system state, Ghost is good for every major milestone and system state for every day use.

Hi,

Yes Ghost is good and so is Acronis True Image. Check them out.

Yes the conventional Windows Backup is good too, taking the registry backup - what they term it as system state backup.

See if this helps you as well.
