I'm trying to get in to a 3Com SuperStack 5500 swtich. It's not giving out DHCP, and none of the suggested IP address ranges have been valid.

I'm using a usb-serial adaptor, and normal serial cable (rj45 end into the switch) to connect. As per instructions and indeed standard practice, settings are as follows:

Baud: 9600
Data: 8 bit
Parity: None
Stop: 1 bit
Flow Control: None

I have tried diffent adaptors and different console cables but I get no connection. I am using the correct COM port.

The only output i see if if i power-cycle the swtich - theres about 10 lines of garbage that come out over the course of a few minutes, then nothing.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

PS - I understand that this may not be the perfect forum so please accept my apologies if this is the case

Do you have a real com port? i.e. COM1 or COM2 on a 9 way DIN: not from USB. Check if the protocol works on COM1/COM2 first.

Some things just don't work on USB/Serial connectors but I haven't figured out why yet. It basically rules out playing with serial connections on the newer laptops which have nothing but USB.

I'm also troubled with "too new equipment" - USB only unfortunatley.

The device is automatically assigning itself to COM4, I manually overrode this to COM1 and rebooted - same garbage.

It's quite a pain. I have managed to connect to a 3Com X5 using the same method...strange

If you're getting garbage, that indicates a baud rate mismatch.

I'd use your terminal program, and just go through each baud rate, step through, hit enter a couple of times, and see if you get a prompt.
