hi,

I have a W2003 cluster (two IBM xSeries) in a SAN
environment. On the SAN, I have created more than
one logical disk, (quorum, Applic01, Applic02),
and I have "shared" (SAN/LUN speaking) them for my 2 servers.

When the sistem is (was) not in production I followed these steps:

0) make SAN logical disks and share them to server group

1) power on SRV1, discover disks, format partitions then,
assign letter and shutdown

2) power on SRV2, discover disks, ----------------------
assign letter and shutdown

3) power on SRV1, install MSCS, add virtual servers

4) power on SRV2, and join it to cluster.

There are some moments in which both servers are down.

MSCS installation goes all OK, and my servers have their
TCP adress and 2 virtual servers: one for SQL, and another
for another application. This happened some months ago,
and the system is now in production.

Well. Now I need another virtual server with another logical
disk on the SAN; questions:

which are the correct steps to do this ?

Can do it whithout shutdown both servers ?

The server has to be turned on together ?

I have thinked this sequence

0) shutdown SRV2
1) Discover disks on SRV1 format, and assign letter
2) Create new Cluster resources
3) power on SRV2 (the machine performs a discovery of
disks), assign letter
4) try to failover new resorce

Suggestions, objections ?

Thank in advance

You can do the entire procedure without shutting down anything. We do this all the time.

(This is based on EMC termilogy, but it should match up close enough.)

Create the LUN.
Assign it to the resource group.
Discover the volume on both nodes.
On which ever node will be the active node assign a drive letter. Assign the same drive letter on the other node.
Create the cluster resource group.
Assign the drive as a resource within the resource group.
Bring the clustered resource online and then format it on the active node.

Fail the resource over back and forth to ensure that it's available on both nodes.

hi,
tank-you Denny for your ansewr.

Just a question: has OS (W2K or WS2K3) any problems
if both machines access shared disk together
before MSCS has been defined on it ?

bye

If both machines try to write to a file at the same time the file can become corrupt. The volume can become corrupt depending on how the machines access the volume.
