sending out of office asst replies outside the company

We run exchange server 2003 and outlook 2000 on the clients. I have people asking me why the out of office assistant doesn't send replies outside of the company. Two things-- how can I change this setting and secondly is it wise to do that? Any risks involved if I set it up that way?

You do it in the SMTP connector. It is a tick box.

It is up to you on whether to do it or not. Most people think it is ok.

Ok... at the first of sounding like a new LAN Administrator, although that's exactly what I am, how do I change that setting?

Remember the word SPAM? If your company does not have a way to filter SPAM effectively, as soon as you turn this on all spammers will have a verification of any email addresses with OOO replies. If only for this reason think twice about turning this on externally. Our company has a great spam solution (Postini)and we don't allow this.For our users who absolutely MUST reply when they are out of the office we recommend they set up a rule. Safer that way.

and the dates that you will be gone, and likely a coworker's phone number or email address. Just a tad bit of social engineering and you'll return from vacation to an empty house.

OOFs to the internet are always a bad idea.
