Semi-transparent text boxes?

How do I make a 60% opaque text box? I want to see the background behind the text- but yet i still want it to be readable- how do I do this?

my entire concept rides on this- so i would really appreciate any help/ideas you might have.

You can't set the text to be 60% opaque. What you can do is use a program like PhotoShop to create a pic of your background with opaque text. Because your text will be part of the picture you won't be able to drag select the text and if the picture is a background you'll have to prevent other objects from moving in front of your text.

I feared as much. That approach won't work for me. My text changes everyday. I made a template page with the background and the text boxes- but i made the text itself editable. The goal was to be able to edit the text quickly and effortlessly.

To be clear- it is not the text i wish to be semi-transparent- but rather the background of the text box. I need to float some clear white behind it to keep the text in contrast with the background.

I'm an art director- So I have the whole Adobe CS and am well versed in PS and AI. I tried putting the semi-opaque boxes in the image (PS) and floating the text above it in GoLive- but there is no garrentee that it will ine up in someone's real world experience. I did find the trace object box which offer's an opaqueness option- what is this? can i make the text a layer above a box (assuming that i can make the box trasparent using this trace option?)

I am one of those WYSIWYG web site guys- so appologies in advance for what might appear to be dumb questions.

Do you have this posted somewhere so i can see it? I'm not sure i understand what your trying to do and seeing it may help me solve your problem.

I posted the site on my web site - there is a link on the main page below the photo image- check out "left right and center". i have two versions of the site up and am working out the many technical and design flaws.

you can see that the stories are listed on the white backgrounds- it would be nice if the background was semi-transparent so the viewer could see the photo behind it.
