Typcially the records on a linked subreport are determined by the sibreport liks nad the record selection formula of the main report.

What I really want to do is restrict the data displayed in the main report based on the results of a calculated field in the sub report. 3

If the subreport is executed PRIOR to what you're displaying in the main report, then you can use shared variables to key off of.
dgillz brings up a valid point, you may want to reverse which report is the main report.
