I just built a new compter, but I have been having a very odd problem. The PS/2 Ports seem to suddenly stop working, though the computer continues to work (I can turn it off by pressing the power button, and windows starts the shutdown procedure).
They always both turn off at the same time, and I have had this problem with multiple ps/2 keyboards (USB devices seem to work okay).

The motherboard is a Chaintech VNF3-250 w/ a AMD64 3200+.

Hi Sirnuke. Sorry for the late response, but I was flipping back through to see what I've missed recently and I ran across your post.

Out of curiousity, what is the manufacturer and make of your motherboard?

Typically, this kind of problem is related to a small, but inconvenient incompatibility between your BIOS and the OS you are running (most notably Windows 2K and XP).

Make sure you have the absolute lateste BIOS. If you do, then check their website or FTP site to see if they have a beta BIOS that might address this problem. Many times in quite a few PC's I have, this type of problem was observed and corrected with a BIOS flash (and a few of them even beta BIOS) and it always cleared the problem right up.

Cheers!

In my mind, no matter what version of BIOS you have installed, PS/2 ports both Keyboard and Mouse should work right out of the box. However, most motherboards have a chipset driver disk which comes with the motherboard. Did you look to see if you have one. Normally this is installed after the OS.

There is a chance you have a bad mouse or keyboard. A short in a mouse or a loose connection can cause the OS to freeze up. If you have a spare or older keyboard/Mouse you might try that, even if you have to borrow one.

I have heard of problems with NT/W2k. Sometimes after applying a service pack you have to remove the mouse driver and install it again.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Well ceh4702, that might be in your mind, but it does happen. Here is something right out of the Asus patch notes for one of my main PC's BIOS updates:

1010: Solve PS/2 keyboard sometimes become abnormal after entering Windows.

1008: Solve system may hang up while some kinds of wireless keyboard/mouse used.

1006: Fix some Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse cannot work under Windows XP

Those are just a few examples of where PS/2 ports can not work correctly with certain versions of Windows.

:)
